A parish helps to raise money for a three year-old child to undergo a medical treatment |

| A small inhabitant of the town of Syserty in the Urals suffered a serious disease, a complicated heart trouble, from his birth. He needed an operation, which could be done only in Moscow. Much money was required to go to the capital city, to buy medicines and to ensure after-operation care of the child, which his parents did not have. Parishioners of the Church of Sts Simeon the Host of God and Anna the Prophet helped to raise the necessary money. People in Syserty lifted up an ardent prayer to Sts Simeon and Anna that the Lord might save and protect little Simeon. And the miracle happened as the little boy underwent a complex operation in the largest cardiosurgery institute. Now Simeon is already 4. He himself, his mum and dad and other relatives often come to the church to thank the Lord and the heavenly intercessors for their grace-giving help. The most ardent prayer is offered by the boy's great-grandmother who used to sing in the choir of Sts Simeon and Anna's. Yekaterinburg diocesan news agency |

A missionary convent reviving in the Yekaterinburg diocese |

| With the blessing of Archbishop Vikenty of Yekaterinburg and Verkhoturie, the missionary convent of Sts Elizabeth and Mary at the Maly Lyp tract near the settlement of Shamary is being restored to life. Built by the decree of Emperor Nicholas II issued on March 8, 1916, this monastery was dedicated to the Holy Righteous Elizabeth, the patron saint of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Fyodorovna, and to St. Mary Magdalene Equal-to-the-Apostles. Through the efforts of Hegumen Seraphim (Keznetsov), Sts Elizabeth and Mary's missionary convent was built up on the eve of the terrible disaster of 1917 in the Maly Lyp tract at Shamary, almost on the border with the Perm Region (before the 1917 Revolution this area belonged to the Perm Region). Now this convent of prayer, labour and charity is being revived at the Shalinsky District. The convent invites Orthodox young girls and women willing to devote their life to the service of God and their neighbours and all those who are ready to help the humiliated, the destitute, the abandoned and the lost. The statute of the reviving Sts Elizabeth and Mary's Convent is based on the statute of Sts Martha and Mary Convent founded by Grand Duchess Elizabeth Fyodorovna in Moscow. | Police in the traditionally Buddhist Russian republic of Tuva seem to be indifferent to violent attacks on Protestants. Pastor Aleksandr Degtyarev of Gospel Light Baptist Church, told Forum 18 News Service that "for them it is minor - they have too many murders to solve." The republic's crime rate is amongst the highest in Russia, with two-and-a-half times more murders than the national average. Physical attacks against religious believers are uncommon elsewhere in Russia, but there has in recent years been an apparent increase in cases of arson attacks on places of worship reported by Orthodox, Lutheran, Baptist, Pentecostal, Adventist, Jewish and Muslim communities. In some cases, police investigations have resulted in prosecution, but in others police either fail to investigate or refuse to acknowledge that arson has taken place. Ukrainian Orthodox urge the National Bank not to issue a coin with an image of the Mother of God |

| Kiev, July 27, Interfax - The Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods in Ukraine has appealed to the president of the National Bank to abandon the idea of issuing a commemorative coin called “The Protecting Veil.” The Orthodox have issued a statement calling .to take such a step with responsibility and consideration to avoid profaning and mocking Christian shrines.. ”The reproduction of the holy faces of Christ and the Most Holy Mother of God on coins is an act of disregard for the religious feelings of Orthodox Christians”, says the Union.s statement parts of which has been cited by the Ukrainian Religious News Service on Wednesday. The authors of the document warn the National Bank leaders about “the moral inadmissibility of reproducing holy image on coins.” They believe the representation of churches dedicated to the Feast of the Protecting Veil of the Mother of God .will be more appropriate and will testify to respectful attitude towards the religious feelings of Orthodox citizens.. |

The Prosecutor.s Office considers lucrative impulses to be the principal motive for the murder of abbot |

| Moscow, July 27, Interfax - The principal motive for the murder of Father Herman, abbot of the Davidov Monastic Hermitage near Moscow, were lucrative impulses, the Moscow Regional Prosecutor.s Office informed Interfax on Wednesday. The office did not confirm the reports about the detention of two suspects. .At the present moment, there are no apprehended or suspected persons in this case., a press-service official said. The Moscow Regional Prosecutor.s Office has instituted legal proceedings and started inquiry into the murder of Archimandrite Herman (his secular name is Vyacheslav Khapugin, b. 1965), church dean of the Chekhovsky District, committed on July 26 at the Novy Byt settlement near the town of Chekhov, under Russian Criminal Code Article 105, Part 2 (lucrative killing), the press-service explained. .The body of the clergyman was discovered in his private chambers in the monastery, lying on the floor with his hands tied up with a wire. According to preliminary data, his death was caused by a craniocerebral trauma., the Prosecutor.s Office reported. At present, several expert examinations have been prescribed and carried out, including forensic, dactyloscopic and odorological. Other urgent investigative actions have been undertaken to identify and find the perpetrators. The investigative operative group is led by Valery Kuznetsov, regional deputy prosecutor. |

A cross to be erected on the Volga to commemorate Orthodox clergy executed by shooting |

| Nizhni Novgorod, July 27, Interfax - A repentance cross will be erected in Mochalny Island on the Volga across the Chkalov Stairs descending to the riverside in Nizhny Novgorod. The cross will be installed on the spot from where the bodies of Orthodox clergy executed by shooting were thrown down to the Volga in 1918. Made of serpentine, the cross will be fixed in a concrete case for stability, the Nizhny Novgorod diocesan press-service reports. Among the clergymen thrown down into the river was Bishop Lavrenty (Knyazev) of Balakhnin, who had to rule the Nizhny Novgorod diocese alone in 1917-1918 because the ruling bishop, Archbishop Ioakim (levitsky) had left to Moscow for a Local Council in 1917, then went to the Crimea, where he had a country house, was hanged by bandits there. In order to do away with the disagreeable bishop, the authorities used as a pretext the resolution of the congress of the Nizhni Novgorod diocesan assembly, protesting against the confiscation of churches, monasteries and church property by the atheistic authorities, the diocesan press-service explained. It was suggested to the arrested clergy that they should renounce God and their holy orders to be pardoned. The proposal was rejected, and the chekists beat the clergy unmercifully and announced the verdict - execution by shooting. Late in the evening of November 6, 1918, Bishop Lavrenty, Archpriest Alexiy Porfiryev and Aleksey Neidgardt, marshal of the Nizhni Novgorod nobility, were executed by shooting by Latvian Shooters (Russian soldiers refused to execute the clergy and a compatriot). In 2000, Bishop Lavrenty and Archpriest Alexiy Porfiryev were canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church. |

A cruel and bloody crime has been committed to violate all the divine and human laws. Vices tend to permeate into the life of society when society diverts from eternal biblical commandments: you shall not murder; you shall not steal. Archimandrite Herman's life was devoted to the preaching of these commandments, to the building of an island of faith, love and service of people in the monastery entrusted to his care. The prayer march went from Moscow through Minsk to Kiev. Its participants, who were 100, walked from 40 to 60 kilometers a day and covered in total 1800 kilometers, the press-service of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church reported. A festive concert will take place, devoted to the finish of the international cross-procession, on Friday at the Singing Field near the Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Kiev, with performers coming from Russia, Byelorussia and Ukraine. |

BELARUS: PROTESTANT PROPERTY OBSTACLES CONTINUE |

| The Belarusian religion law's insistence on religious communities being registered at a non-residential address, as well as state approval for religious activities outside purpose-built places of worship, creates obstacles for Protestants in particular, Forum 18 News Service has found. For example, the charismatic New Generation Church's 150-strong congregation in Baranovichi faces long-running problems, caused by the authorities' refusal to allow a warehouse the church owns to be converted into a church. Reasons given vary between multi-storey housing being planned for the site, and that it will be used for a stadium's car park. Another example is the Minsk-based charismatic New Life Church, which faces continuing obstruction in using a cowshed for worship. The latest threat, Forum 18 has learnt, is that the city is considering ending the church's right to the land beneath the cowshed. Officials claim that the cowshed can only be used only for its designated purpose - even though animal husbandry is illegal in Minsk city. The Russian Church optimistic about prospects for Orthodox broadcasting |

| Moscow, July 28, Interfax - Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, vice-chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church relations, welcomes the launching of the Spas Orthodox TV channel, which has taken place this Thursday. ‘It is wonderful that the now second initiative to set up an Orthodox TV channel has led to the real launch of broadcasting’, the priest said in a talk with an Interfax correspondent, reminding him that the first initiative of this kind was the Soyuz (Union - IF) channel in Yekaterinburg. Father Vsevolod congratulated the Spas editor-in-chief Ivan Demidov and his coworkers on the launch of their programs. ‘I have the honour to call almost all the people who are to be authors and presenters of these programs my friends. These people are believers, competent and lively, and it is especially gratifying that this channel begins with the most meaningful and sensible TV genres, such as talks in the studio, talk-shows, etc.’, he said to the agency. Wishing success to the new channel and its staff, the priest urged them not to be afraid of the fact that their audience is yet small and socially limited. ‘The most important thing is that an alternative is offered to the dulling and drowsing television, the flow of stupid entertainment, spiritual fast food, intellectual cud and pseudo-cultural chips produced to chain one to his sofa with a bottle of bear’, he emphasized. The priest noted that television in Russia and in the rest of the world was developing to give more choices. He is convinced that ‘the time is not far off when the six-button monopoly is over, just as the monopoly of 10 or 15 Soviet newspapers is finished, and people will have an opportunity to choose from among dozens and even hundreds of channels’. He believes the Spas and other Orthodox channels should be prepared for this time and be active in offering their production to cable networks, regional television and eventually to the telecast in Moscow. ‘It is just important that all the groups of Orthodox-minded journalists, producers, TV organizers work together, without doing anything at the expense of one another, and understand that they have one common task to return to the people the television teaching, educating, enlightening, creative’, the priest believes. He is convinced that ‘if there is no unity and mutual assistance, if rivalry and intrigues prevail, everything will go to rack and ruin. But if Orthodox TV people work together, they will determine the future of Russian TV broadcasting. |

Tschechien: "Velehrad-Synode" betonte ostkirchliches Erbe |

| Botschaften an die Katholiken, an die Christen und an die Öffentlichkeit des Landes -Verbindung mit dem Mitteleuropäischen Katholikentag Prag/Tschechien, 19.07.2005 (KAP) Das byzantinische Erbe des Christentums in den tschechischen Ländern wurde bei der zweiten Session der "Velehrad-Synode" ("Plenarversammlung der römisch-katholischen Kirche der Tschechischen Republik") betont. Der mährische Wallfahrtsort Velehrad war Tagungsort der Synode, die auf einen Beschluss der Tschechischen Bischofskonferenz aus dem Jahre 1997 zurückgeht. Die Synode ist aber auch eng mit dem Mitteleuropäischen Katholikentag verbunden. Ziel der Plenarversammlung war die weitere Umsetzung des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils, die zur Zeit des Kommunismus nicht möglich gewesen war. Daher war auch die Verantwortung der christlichen Laien in Kirche und Gesellschaft ein Zentralthema. Bei der Eröffnung der ersten Plenarversammlung - im Juli 2003 - war auch der Wiener Kardinal Christoph Schönborn anwesend. Velehrad war damals erster Schauplatz einer Serie grenzübergreifender Wallfahrten des Mitteleuropäischen Katholikentags. Die im Zuge des Mitteleuropäischen Katholikentags auch in Österreich wieder stärker ins Bewusstsein gerückte Tradition der Wallfahrt nach Velehrad reicht bis ins 9. Jahrhundert zurück, als in Mähren die mazedonischen Glaubensboten Cyrill und Method wirkten. In unmittelbarer Nähe des Ortes befinden sich Spuren der ältesten christlichen Kirche auf mährischem Boden. Auch die jetzige zweite Plenarversammlung betonte das "cyrillo-methodianische Erbe". In der Botschaft an die Christen aller Kirchen heißt es, Velehrad sei "mit Bemühungen um die Herstellung der Einheit aller Christen engstens verbunden". Die Teilnehmer der Synodalversammlung verabschiedeten drei Kurzbotschaften an die Katholiken, an alle Christen in Tschechien sowie an die Öffentlichkeit in der Tschechischen Republik. In der Botschaft an die Gläubigen der römisch-katholischen Kirche wird unterstrichen, dass ebenso wie zur Zeit der totalitären Unterdrückung auch heute "Mut und Ausdauer im öffentlichen Glaubensbekenntnis in Wort und Tat" erforderlich sei. Die Synode habe "reiche Erfahrungen des offenen Dialogs, demütigen Suchens, unermüdlicher Arbeit und der Freude an der Gemeinschaft der lebendigen Kirche und der Gegenwart Gottes" gebracht. In der Botschaft an alle Christen der Tschechischen Republik betonen die Synodenteilnehmer die Bedeutung von Phänomenen wie "dem Wandel der europäischen Zivilisation, der Alterung der Bevölkerung, der sozialen Ungerechtigkeit, dem Terrorismus". Gemeinsam suchten die Christen eine Antwort in der "Solidarität der Erschütterten" zusammen mit den Menschen, "die nach den Gräueln der Ideologien des 20. Jahrhunderts nach dem authentischen Leben streben". Im Text der Botschaft an die Öffentlichkeit heißt es, die Synodenteilnehmer seien sich ihrer "Mitverantwortung für die Glaubwürdigkeit der Kirche und für den Zustand des Landes" bewusst. Insbesondere werde die Verpflichtung gesehen, das "Leben der Familien, die Erziehung der Kinder und der Jugend" zu unterstützen. Aber auch die Entwicklung von Kultur und Bildung, die Integration der Minderheiten sowie das Schicksal der Menschen mit Behinderung, der Arbeitslosen und der Menschen am Rande der Gesellschaft seien ein Anliegen der Katholiken. Bereits die erste Plenarversammlung im Juli 2003 war von einer lebhaften Debatte um eine Vielfalt an Themen geprägt gewesen. Auch die schwierigsten Fragen, die - wie es hieß - "mit der Geschichte zusammenhängen und bis heute das Leben der katholischen Kirche in Tschechien beeinflussen", wurden nicht ausgeklammert. Gemeint waren damit offenbar die Probleme im Verhältnis zwischen Kirche und Gesellschaft, angefangen mit der Gestalt des 1415 auf dem Scheiterhaufen verbrannten tschechischen Reformators Jan Hus über die Zeit der habsburgischen Gegenreformation bis herauf zu den Bestrebungen zur Bildung einer tschechischen "Nationalkirche" Anfang des 20. | Er war eine Symbolfigur des katholischen Widerstandes gegen das KP-Regime - 1976 verweigerte er als Abgeordneter die Zustimmung zur führenden Rolle der KP Warschau/Polen, 22.07.2005 (KAP) Stanislaw Stomma, eine Symbolfigur des katholischen Widerstandes gegen das polnische KP-Regime, ist am 21. Juli (Donnerstag) im Alter von 97 Jahren in Warschau gestorben. Der Politiker und Publizist gehörte zu den Gründern der katholischen Monatszeitschrift "Znak" und zur Redaktion der Krakauer katholischen Wochenzeitung "Tygodnik Powszechny". Stomma war von 1956 bis 1976 Vorsitzender des katholischen Abgeordnetenzirkels "Znak" (Zeichen) im polnischen Parlament. Der Name Stommas wurde international bekannt, als er 1976 als einziger Abgeordneter gegen eine Verfassungsänderung stimmte, mit der die "unlösbare Verbundenheit mit der Sowjetunion" und die führende Rolle der kommunistischen Partei im Grundgesetz verankert werden sollte. 1989 wurde er bei den ersten freien Wahlen in den Senat gewählt, bis 1991war er Alterspräsident des Oberhauses des polnischen Parlaments. Der aus Wilna (heute: Vilnius) stammende Jurist und Publizist gehörte zum Kreis um "Tygodnik Powszechny", aus deren Umfeld 1956 die Parlamentariergruppe "Znak" hervorging. Vieles, wofür Stomma eingetreten war, wurde von der unabhängigen Gewerkschaftsbewegung "Solidarnosc" aufgenommen. Nach der Flucht aus dem heimatlichen Wilna 1944 hatte sich Stomma zunächst in Krakau angesiedelt. Er lehrte an der Juridischen Fakultät der Jagiellonischen Universität und schloss sich dem Kreis um "Tygodnik Powszechny" an. Aus diesem Kreis ging nach dem "Oktoberfrühling" von 1956 "Znak" hervor, eine Parlamentariergruppe, die bewusst unter den Bedingungen des kommunistischen Staates ein Zeichen für christliche Grundhaltungen setzen wollte. "Znak" nutzte den erkämpften Spielraum, um für Anliegen der Kirche einzutreten, die zugleich Anliegen einer um staatsbürgerliche Freiheiten ringenden polnischen Gesellschaft waren. Für die kleine Gruppe katholischer Abgeordneter war ihre Tätigkeit immer eine "Gratwanderung", wobei es Prof. Stomma gelang, politisches Mandat und Integrität als Katholik zu vereinbaren. Als dies nicht mehr möglich war, zog er 1976 die Konsequenzen. Mit Österreich war Prof. Stomma seit dem Wiener Katholischen Weltkongress der Presse von 1957 eng verbunden. Insbesondere mit der Wiener katholischen Wochenzeitung "Die Furche" bestanden enge Kontakte. Es war, wie der - inzwischen verstorbene - frühere "Furche"-Chefredakteur Kurt Skalnik zu Stommas 85. Poland May Create John Paul II Holiday |

The lower house, or Sejm, voted 338-3 for the bill that will make Oct. 16 a day of reflection and remembrance of the Polish-born Karol Wojtyla. That date was chosen because he was elected pope on Oct. 16, 1978. Two lawmakers abstained from voting. The bill now goes to the Senate, which is expected to approve it this week. President Aleksander Kwasniewski is expected to sign it into law. The annual holiday will be dedicated to remembering and studying John Paul's teachings, but it won't be a government holiday. Papst ernennt neuen Bischof für mazedonische Hauptstadt Skopje |

| Der Bischof fungiert zugleich als Apostolischer Exarch für die Katholiken des byzantinischen Ritus Vatikanstadt-Skopje, 21.07.05 (KAP) Papst Benedikt XVI. hat Kiro Stojanov zum neuen römisch-katholischen Bischof der mazedonischen Hauptstadt Skopje ernannt. Gleichzeitig wurde Stojanov auch Apostolischer Exarch für die Katholiken des byzantinischen Ritus in Mazedonien. Der 46-jährige Stojanov wurde im Alter von 26 Jahren zum Priester und bereits mit 40 zum Bischof geweiht. Bislang war er Weihbischof und Apostolischer Administrator in Skopje. Das mazedonische Exarchat für die griechisch-katholischen (unierten) Gläubigen wurde erst 2001 von Papst Johannes Paul II. errichtet. Dazu machte er den auf mazedonischem Gebiet liegenden Teil der unierten Eparchie Krizevci - deren Bischofssitz sich in Kroatien befindet - selbständig und ernannte den lateinischen von Skopje zum Exarchen. In Mazedonien leben rund 20.000 Katholiken, etwa 10.000 davon gehören dem byzantinischen Ritus an. Die unierten Gemeinden in Mazedonien gehen auf eine spontane Unionsbewegung im 19. | Belgrad/Serbien, 21.07.2005 (KAP) Der serbisch-orthodoxe Metropolit von Zagreb, Laibach und Triest, Jovan (Pavlovic), hat sich am Donnerstag für einen Papstbesuch in Belgrad ausgesprochen. "Es wäre gut, wenn Papst Benedikt XVI. noch vor Beginn der Gespräche über den künftigen Status des Kosovo nach Serbien kommen könnte", sagte der Metropolit in einem Interview mit der in Novi Sad erscheinenden Tageszeitung "Dnevnik". Nach Ansicht des Metropoliten wäre es wichtig, dass sich der Papst mit den Verhältnisse vertraut macht, in denen die serbische Volksgruppe in der von der UNO verwalteten Provinz Kosovo lebt. "Seine Botschaften an die internationalen Amtsträger, die danach erfolgen würden, wären von großer Tragweite", präzisierte Jovan. Der Metropolit erwartet sich, dass der Heilige Synod des Belgrader Patriarchats die "richtige" Entscheidung treffen werde, wenn sich die Frage eines Papst-Besuches stellt: "Wenn wir unserem Volk und unserer Kirche Gutes wünschen, müssen wir an die Zukunft denken. Auch der Ökumenische Patriarch Bartholomaios I. hat den Papst nach Istanbul eingeladen. Der Papst hat auch eine Einladung aus Jerusalem erhalten". Bereits als er noch Kardinal war, sollte Joseph Ratzinger heuer im Frühjahr auf Einladung der serbisch-orthodoxen Kirche nach Belgrad reisen. Nach dem Tod von Papst Johannes Paul II. und der Wahl Ratzingers zum neuen Oberhaupt der katholischen Kirche kam es nicht mehr dazu. Kardinal Walter Kasper, Präsident des Päpstlichen Rates für die Einheit der Christen, hatte am vorigen Sonntag der Belgrader Zeitung "Vecernje novosti" gesagt, Papst Benedikt XVI. habe vor, Serbien zu besuchen. Dies erklärte Kurienkardinal Walter Kasper, Präsident des Päpstlichen Rates für die Einheit der Christen, in einem Gespräch mit der Belgrader Zeitung Vecernje novosti". Es würde dem Papst große Freude bereiten, mit dem serbisch-orthodoxen Patriarchen Pavle I. zusammenzutreffen, so Kasper. "Heute ist es allerdings schwer, von einem Termin zu reden, da es sich um Begegnungen handelt, die umfangreiche Vorbereitungen und eine sehr detaillierte Organisation erfordern", betonte der Kardinal. Kasper lobte die guten Beziehungen, die zwischen dem Heiligen Stuhl und der serbisch-orthodoxen Kirche herrschen und die sich in den vergangenen Jahren "stark gebessert" hätten. "Wir sind an einem Punkt angelangt, wo wir die Kontakte zwischen der (katholischen) Bischofskonferenz und dem serbischen Patriarchat als normal und sehr lebhaft bezeichnen können", betonte der Kardinal. Solche Beziehungen gebe es zu keiner anderen orthodoxen Kirche. Der verstorbene Papst Johannes Paul II. wollte nach Angaben des serbisch-montenegrinischen Außenministers Vuk Draskovic 1995 nach Belgrad reisen und von dort aus einen Appell an die UNO richten, die Sanktionen gegen das damalige Jugoslawien aufzuheben. | The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Macedonia, Archbishop Jovan (Vranisskovski) of Ohrid and Skopje, has now been jailed for 18 months on charges of "inciting national, racial and religious hatred, schism and intolerance". Jovan's colleague, Bishop Marko of Dremvica and Bitola, told Forum 18 News Service that, as well as keeping Jovan under conastant surveillance, police forced him to change out of his cassock and refused to allow him to take anything with him into prison. "The archbishop was not permitted to take his prayer book, the Gospels, an icon or any of the insignia of his rank with him," Bishop Marko told Forum 18. During the first 30 days of his jail term, Jovan is not being allowed visits from anyone, apart from his lawyer and his immediate family, who are only being allowed to visit him once, for five minutes only. Wiener Stiftung "Pro Oriente" will römisch-katholisch - orthodoxen Dialog unterstützen |

| Wien/Österreich,, 28.07.2005 / APD Stiftung Pro Oriente (Wien) Der geschäftsführende Präsident der Wiener Stiftung "Pro Oriente", Dr. Johann Marte, hat die Ankündigung der Wiederaufnahme des internationalen offiziellen theologischen Dialogs zwischen römisch-katholischer und orthodoxer Kirche positiv kommentiert. Marte wörtlich: "Eine Mitteilung, die Hoffnung macht". Die 1964 von Kardinal Franz König (1905-2004) gegründete Stiftung "Pro Oriente" möchte auf der bewährten Basis der inoffiziellen Arbeit einen Beitrag zu diesem Dialog leisten. Schon in der Vergangenheit seien die Ergebnisse der Vorarbeit von "Pro Oriente" verschiedentlich vom Vatikan aufgegriffen worden und hätten dem offiziellen Dialog als Grundlage gedient. Der Wiener Kardinal Christoph Schönborn bestätigte anlässlich der im letzten Jahr stattgefundenen 40-Jahr-Feier die Rolle der Wiener Stiftung: "Es gibt keine vergleichbare katholische Organisation, irgendwo in der Weltkirche, die so umfassend, so entschieden und so nachhaltig das Gespräch mit den christlichen Osten geführt hat". Marte bezeichnete gegenüber der Nachrichtenagentur Kathpress in Wien zwei konkrete Themenfelder in denen sich "Pro Oriente" in nächster Zeit engagieren möchte: Die diffizile Frage der unierten Kirchen und das Petrusamt. Obwohl die Union von Teilen orthodoxer Kirchen mit Rom Jahrhunderte zurückliege, bilde sie besonders nach der Wiedererlangung der Religionsfreiheit im ehemaligen Ostblock vor allem in der Ukraine und in Rumänien einen "Stolperstein" für die ökumenische Annäherung. Seit dem Jahre 2001 bemühe sich "Pro Oriente" unter der Leitung von em. Prof. Ernst Christoph Suttner im Rahmen von zwei Projekten, in die Ereignisse um das Entstehen der Unionen in der Ukraine und in Siebenbürgen mit den Mitteln der historisch-kritischen Quellenforschung Klarheit zu bringen und damit eine Grundlage für gegenseitiges Vertrauen und Versöhnung zu schaffen. Nach insgesamt fünf Tagungen hätten nunmehr beide Forschergruppen mit der Erarbeitung einer "gemeinsamen Darstellung" der damaligen Ereignisse begonnen. Sollte dies gelingen, könnte das Projekt auch über Rumänien und die Ukraine hinaus beispielgebend wirken. Im Hinblick auf das Petrusamt beschäftigen sich seit zwei Jahren die neun Kirchen der syrischen Tradition im Rahmen der von "Pro Oriente" eingesetzten "Syriac Commission" unter dem Titel: "Dienst an der Communio in und zwischen den Kirchen der syrischen Tradition: Autorität, Konziliarität und Primat" mit diesem Thema. Die nächste Tagung wird im Jahre 2006 in Wien stattfinden. Die Wiederaufnahme des offiziellen theologischen Dialogs zwischen römisch-katholischer und orthodoxer Kirche auf Weltebene hat im ökumenischen Bereich größtes Aufsehen ausgelöst. Die letzte Konferenz der gemischten römisch-katholisch-orthodoxen Dialogkommission hatte im Jahre 2000 in Baltimore (Maryland/USA) stattgefunden. Bereits in Baltimore hatte die Unierten-Frage verhindert, dass es zu Fortschritten kam. In der Folge wurde dieser zwischenkirchliche Dialog von zentraler Bedeutung vollständig auf Eis gelegt. Im April betonte Bischof Tichon Ivanow, Bischofsvikar für die bulgarisch-orthodoxe Kirche in West- und Mitteleuropa, gegenüber Radio Vatikan, dass Papst Benedikt XVI. in Sachen Ökumene und Dialog der Religionen den Kurs seines Vorgängers fortsetzen wolle. Ivanow wörtlich: "Die Wiederherstellung der sichtbaren Einheit aller Christen nannte der neue Papst als seine vorrangige Aufgabe". Das geringste Problem sei die Einheit mit den Orthodoxen, so Ivanow. "Ich behaupte hier und jetzt, die Einigkeit zwischen der orthodoxen Kirche und der römisch-katholischen Kirche kommt schneller, als alle erwarten. Die Orthodoxen werden nicht römisch-katholisch und die Katholiken werden nicht orthodox. Das ist sicher. Aber es könnte sein, dass wir gemeinsam zelebrieren können. denn die Unterschiede zwischen uns sind minimal, wirklich minimal, was den Glauben betrifft. Die Unterschiede zwischen Katholiken und Orthodoxen sind eher vom verletzten Stolz, nicht Klarheit, wer ist eigentlich das Oberhaupt, alles Dinge von denen wir irgend wann sehen, dass es auch ohne geht," so der bulgarisch-orthodoxe Bischof. |
